.:How YOU Can Get Involved:. Taiwanese-American Idols Nightmarket! Spotlight on: Student Art, Film and Photography Exhibition
.:What We Have To Offer:. the Theme: Choose Your Flavor
Choose Your Flavor, reflects the fact that Taiwanese America is as kaleidoscopic, as varied and dynamic, as the individuals who constitute it, and the myriad definitions for identity that they have created. Our aim is to examine the facets of our identity issues, trends, and culture primarily in the present but also in the past, in order to find some understanding of the current state of Taiwanese America.
Speakers If we had room to praise all of our speakers, we would do it. But for now, you'll just have to settle for a list of the many accomplished speakers who will be there to enlighten us: Nancy Yu - C.J. Chen - Tommy Tan - Hung-Kuan Chen - Sophie Shao - David Ho - Natasha Chang - S.K. Chang - Yvonne Wu - Moulann - George Lai - Priscilla Huang - Victor Lin - Lung-chu Chen - Trish Lin - James Hsiao - Angela Chang - Sue-fin Lee - Francis Yang Keynote speaker, Dr. David Ho
For the last twenty years, Dr. David Ho has been both a physician and a prominent figure in the current campaign against HIV/AIDS. Born in Taichung, Taiwan on Nov. 3, 1952, Dr. Ho immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12 years old. He attended both MIT and Caltech before enrolling at Harvard Medical School, earning his M.D. in 1978. Since that time, Dr. Ho has established himself as a world-renown leader and researcher in the fight against HIV/AIDS.. Through his work, he has shown that HIV is an active virus right from the time of infection, leading him to discover a combination of therapy drugs which now treat the virus at a much earlier stage. His contributions have earned him such recognitions as the Scientific Award of the Chinese-American Medical Society and the 1996 TIME Magazine Man of the Year Award.
.:How YOU Can Get Involved:. ITASA is not just about Yale providing a conference for you; there are so many ways that you can get actively involved. We want to see what you can do and how you contribute to our community; some of the many ways you can get involved are listed below! If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please comment below, and we will get in touch with you to start making arrangements!
Taiwanese-American Idol The annual talent show is on! This year we're billing it as "Taiwanese-American Idol", but don't worry, we won't judge as harshly as Simon! This is a great chance for your college to show a little spirit and show off what you can do. Solo and group performances welcome! How you can get involved: Start preparing your act now, and let us know how you intend on stealing the show!
Nightmarket! Pachinko, mini-basketball, DDR, Karaoke, mochi, shaved ice, boba, and much, much more... Come for the food, stay for the games, stay even longer to watch your friends embarrass themselves singing karaoke and playing DDR. On Friday night, we're packing all of it, along with hundreds of conference participants, into one place. So authentically Taiwanese, you'll forget you're actually in a college dining hall... How you can get involved: If your college is interested in hosting a game, food, or culture booth, let us know!
Student Film, Fashion, Art and Photography Exhibitions Share your artistic inspirations with the rest of the Taiwanese American community! We will be setting aside a conference room in the hotel for movie reels to be rolling all day long. If you want to take a break from other conference activities, fill up your free time, or can't sleep, this is where you can check out movies made by Taiwanese and Taiwanese-Americans. But, besides showing classics such as the Wedding Banquet or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, we also want to showcase YOUR films! Not a film-maker, but a artist or photographer? Let us know if you would like to bring some of your works- and we'll be hanging them in the corridors of the conference center. And for those of you into fashion; there's a fashion & design workshop just for you! Whether you feel qualified to speak for its panel, or just want to attend it, you may want to think about bringing your designs. How you can get involved: Edit those movies, finish those paintings, develop those photographs, wrap up those sketches... clean up your stuff, and be prepared to show it off. We want to see your flavor!
The next newsletter will be posted when registration begins! It'll also have information on program highlights, 2004 reasons to come to ITASA 2004, Which Boba Flavor Are You? Quiz, and much more! Want more info now? Check out our website at http://yale.itasa.org!
Happy Thanksgiving, see you in February!
